The second European Latvian Cultural Festival, ELKS II, will bring together a record number of participants – 46 artistic groups from 18 different European countries. The patrons are Vaira Vike-Freiberga (the President of Latvia 1999-2007) and Egils Levits, (Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union, European of the Year 2018 in Latvia). The Latvian Minister of Culture, Dace Melbarde and the Mayor of Dublin City, will also attend the Festival.
The first such large-scale festival outside Latvia, ELKS I, took place in Brussels four years ago. One of the leaders of the ELKS I, co-organizers and president of the Latvian Society in Ireland, Inguna Grietiņa-Dārziņa, has taken the upcoming leadership of the festival: “With great joy and responsibility I have taken on this honorable task, the organization of the ELKS II. I wish all those who will experience this celebration in Dublin feel special, welcome and proud of Latvian culture, celebrating (our) Latvia, wherever we live in the world. ” There will also be a parade of participants in the city. It will begin at the Law Society and will end at the location of the Grand Concert at Smithfield Square. Dublin City Council has provided the Festival with this spacious concert venue, with the capacity to accommodate about 3,000 people.
The Festival program has been created by the ELKS II Artistic Council from various European countries. Participants of the event will be offered a wide program – concerts, dances, excursions and social events. Information about the Festival activities is available at: https://elks.latviesi.com/
