The largest European Latvian Cultural Festival (ELKS) in 2019, in just a few days in the capital of the green island, Ireland, is awaiting the first participants from at least 18 countries to arrive. This celebration is particularly distinguished by the fact that ELKS honorary patrons are the former President of the Republic of Latvia, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, and the newly elected President of the Republic of Latvia, Egils Levits. The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, Member of the European Parliament Dace Melbārde and newly elected Mayor of Dublin City Paul McAuliffe will also attend ELKS.
The European Latvian Cultural Festival (ELKS) will be held in Dublin from June 13th to 16th, bringing together 46 artistic groups from 18 countries. On June 13th and 14th, there will be a meeting of the organizing and artistic committee, and the group leaders, and at the same time the first joint rehearsals of choirs and dancers will take place. A special stage for the Grand Concert at June 15th, is going to be built. On Friday, June 14th, the ELKS opening ceremony will be held in the Dublin City Hall, and visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the exhibition “Song Festival Movement outside Latvia”. Later in the evening, everyone will be gathered in a dancing evening at the Irish “Murray’s Pub” with folklore groups “Dūdalnieki” (UK) and “Stockolmas spēlmaņi” (Sweden). On ELKS final day on June 15th, a parade of participants in Latvian folk costumes will start at the Dublin City Law Society and end up at the Smithfield Square, where the Grand Concert will begin at 17:00. There will also be Craftsmen’s Market and Latvian cuisine, as well as activities for families with children and young people on Saturday from 13:00-20:00 at Smithfield Square, Dublin 7. The ELKS Festival closing party will welcome everyone at “Old Belvedere Rugby Club”, where the group “Austrumkalns” (UK) and special guests “Raxtu Raxti” (Latvia) will perform.
